This third version of Elmarit-M 28mm was also re-deisgned in Canada with 8 elements in 6 group. Its optimum performance was still retained from the previous version with improvement in focusing and size. In the second Canadian Elmarit-M At full aperture overall contrast is medium to high and very fine detail is crisply rendered in the centre area image height 9mm. Beyond that the definition becomes progressively softer. Outlines however are delineated with high edge sharpness till the corners and it is these image details that are responsible for the overall impression of the picture.
At and At extremely fine detail is captured on film with very clean edges on axis and a more fuzzy look in the field. Two stops vignetting and negligible distortion are in the same league as the predecessor. Close up performance is very good when stopped down to 5. This lens has excellent overall image quality that will challenge many higher speed film emulsions. And, picking up at our Hong Kong store is also welcome.

Sign Up.When I decided to buy another M8 after taking a year and a half off from it yes, I missed it dearly I took a week to decide which lenses to start with.
I had a set budget correction…my Mastercard had a budget and wanted to get a 28mm and a fast I scoured the net, photo blogs, forums, review sites and what did I find? My curiosity got to me. After all, if I ordered it I could always return it if it did not perform up to my expectations. So there I was. I placed the M8 in my cart, then I changed my mind! I decided to splurge on the 28mm Cron instead. Just as I was about to place the order I decided to sleep on it. So I did, for another week.
After all of the drama and changing my mind I placed the order and patiently waited, and waited, and waited for the Fed Ex guy who was to arrive just 14 hours after I placed the order! Yes, I am an impatient man. I could not wait for DAYS?!?! I had to have this camera and lens kit NOW!!
What mattered most to me though was pure performance so I slapped her on the M8 and took my 1st shot with the new gear. Here is that 1st picture:. When I reviewed this file, which was snapped at F2. The subtle tones and color caught my attention and I then decided I had to get out of the house and go shoot this lens.
So I head out on a drive and wanted to test out what this lens could do. How is the color? The contrast? I like real world results, which is what we all strive for anyway. When I buy a lens I am not buying it for its ultimate resolution or if it can make newspaper print sharper than it appears in the paper itself.
I look for character. Plain and simple. Does this lens have character?Do you need a small super sharp Leica 28mm lens? Look no further! Here I share 28mm portraits, 28mm landscapes and a short Leica Elmarit 28mm review to explaining why I highly recommend this lens. Rather than probably just repeat what others have written before me I thought it is probably easier to show you what the Leica Elmarit-M 28mm lens can do, both on a digital Leica camera and on film, black and white film and some colour film click any image for details of what film was used.
Thanks to Ruby who features in a lot of these photos. Many of the photos were shot during one of my model photography workshops on location in London.
I bought it to use for weddings early in my Leica photography. I will write a short review on the Ultron 28f2 when I get chance. Next I bought the Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f2. It is larger and heavier than the Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f2. I wanted get the Leica Summicron-M 28mm f2 to use for available light wedding photography.

Sorry, your blog cannot share posts by email.Discussion in ' Rangefinder Forum ' started by cbphotoJan 25, Share This Page. Thread Tools. Jan 25, 1. Messages: I'm looking to get a 28mm for frequent use, and my budget is in the Elmarit version 4 or used Elmarit Apsh range.
Any comments on the differences in image character? My other lenses are older version 3 'crons, both 35 and 50, and a 21mm SA and have a perfect mix of smooth and sharp. I know the 28s are more contrasty unless you go back to the BIG ones not ok with mebut how big a difference are we talking about?
I'm only considering the asph in case the size of the v4 is too much. I like compact! Jan 25, 2. Messages: 6, The asph had too little grip surface to mount the other two were too large. The three I retained have different signatures and are also usable on my LTMs.
Jan 25, 3. Messages: 2, ASPH are more micro-contrast, snap, punch oriented; less smooth and silk. Jan 25, 4. Thanks, both! Jan 25, 5. I own the version IV. Be careful as sometimes this one gets lens wobble, the front objective unscrews at the aperture with enough force, or after enough use rattling around in a bag. Perhaps this isn't common but it's my experience. The lens is exactly the size of the 28mm f2 ASPH. I use a 35mm summilux hood on it and it works fine, cheaper too, when used.
The performance is more than most will even be able to utilize. This lens has excellent micro contrast edge to edge even wide open, it's best at f Focusing is easy and smooth. It's built very well besides the wobble issue as you would expect.
The front element is easy to clean off as it is a Plano-concave, the flat end facing out probably used in an attempt to flatten the field more. Jan 25, 6. Jan 26, 7.The high quality of the R-lenses has arguably been at the center of the stellar reputation of Leica's SLR-system. While the Leicaflex and R-cameras were very solid premium offerings, they never quite achieved technological leadership.
In contrast, the companies R-lenses were almost without exception highly regarded and consistently received praise from reviewers.
They combined solid physical build based on an all-metal lens barrel and tight manufacturing tolerances with highly corrected optics that often used special elements to reduce aberrations. For example, tests carried out by Lars Kjellberg at Photodo during the s and early s show that Leica R lenses often topped the rankings for MTF resolution in their respective focal length categories. The first R-lenses were released inwhen the Leicaflex was introduced with the new R bayonet mount.
The lens catalog expanded continuously over time to eventually cover a vast range of focal lengths from the ultra-wide angle to the super telephoto lens, along with specialty optics for fisheye, perspective control, and macro photography. Leica thereby focused on high quality prime lensesso that the system features relatively few zooms, even as the latter became more and more popular among professionals and enthusiasts.

Also, Leica continued to rely on manual focus for its SLR system much longer than the competition. Eventually, a Leica R10 with autofocus capability was developed, but management decided in March not to bring that camera to market and, indeed, to discontinue the entire R-system.
In particular, five different lens bayonet configurations exist for the R-system: i " one-cam lenses " feature one projection at the rear of the lens mount to transfer the chosen aperture opening to the light meter of the original Leicaflex; ii with the change-over to the Leicaflex SL and SL2 models came the addition of a second projection to the lens mount, giving rise to the so-called " two-cam lenses "; iii concurrent with the release of the Leica R3, which features automatic exposure control, a third projection was introduced, giving rise to the " three-cam lenses ".
All the newer three-cam or two-cam lenses can be mounted on older Leicaflex or SL bodies, while older one-cam or two-cam lenses can be attached to newer SL or R bodies, but function in this case only on the basis of stop-down metering. They have the third cam to support transmission of aperture information to R-cameras, but lack the first and second one.
Hence, when buying lenses for a Leica reflex body, it is important to pay attention to the type of mount the optic is equipped with. Early lenses generally use series filters with corresponding retaining rings, while for later releases Leica switched to the metric screw-in filter standard.
Some of the lenses are also available in other colors than black, including chrome, gold or safari-green. Overall, Leica sold aboutR-lenses, or roughly two lenses per reflex-body aboutLeicaflex and R-cameras sold between and However, surely many Leica shooters owned more than one body and, hence, a larger number of lenses.
How many R-lenses do you have in your bag? So, evidently there are quite a few pages devoted to this lens family and its members. Additional detail on many other R-lenses can be found in some of the writings of Erwin Puts, such as in his Leica Lens Compendium or his more recent Lens Chronicle. Free online versions of these are available for download on the Leica resources page.
Moreover, if you are interested in accessories for your Leica R-lenses, you might want to check out the respective pages for UV filterstele-convertersor the Leica Ocular telescope adapter. When I decided to buy another M8 after taking a year and a half off from it yes, I missed it dearly I took a week to decide which lenses to start with. I look for character. Plain and simple. Does this lens have character? Well, I will let you decide for yourself. Click on each photo for a larger version.
They have been resized, levels adjusted and in some cases have had color tweaked or have been converted to Black and White. A digital darkroom is necessary if you want to create shots with YOUR own style.
I believe that NO camera today produces an out of camera shot that looks absolutely spectacular. But, that is just my opinion. When clicking on the shots they will open in the same window so just hit back on your browser to come back here.
28mm Elmarit 3rd version
Here are the shots:. These are just a few of the shots that I took with the Elmarit since I purchased it and all of the above samples have had some photoshop processing. I also took a series of shots to test sharpness at all apertures so you can judge sharpness right out of the camera.
Here is the scene. As you can see its pretty sharp at 2. F22 is a bit hazy. This review is not like others out there as I am showing the shots that I took with this Lens and an M8 that have been resized, had levels adjusted and colors tweaked. The Leica 28mm F2.
Its Aspherical! As with a lot of my gear reviews, the photo samples in this are available in full res to check out. A lot of my photos are taken at night or on film.
For full colour digital shots and another great review of this lens, check out this review from Street Silhouettes. The revision has made this special lens even more special. On framing, the 28mm takes up almost the entire viewfinder. Closest focusing distance is 70cm. The larger hood comes with a new lens cover. I actually think it is really cool. Because the 28mm Elmarit is Aspherical, care needs to be taken as the rear element sticks out quite a long way and you do not want to risk damaging it on anything.
The leather case you get with it for free huge. The lens has a traditional focusing tab for your finger. I like that. The aperture ring to me seems slimmer than other Leica lenses but no lens reliable, firm but smooth. My personal 28mm Elmarit seems to be looser or focuses easier than my other Leica lenses, but it still stays in place just fine. Gotta love those German engineers.
I wish I could try the 28mm F2 Summicron. That said, in the latter months of I have used my 28mm Elmarit a lot more. Not on digital, but on a film MP. What a good Leica lens should be. And yes, it is possible to get a nice depth look in your shots. For wide open landscapes, at higher apertures, this lens performs. In natural or low light, this lens takes in the graduation and the contrast is nice. For me, this lens represents great value.
Other than being brighter than F2. Most of these samples the ones in black and white where shot on my MP 35mm film Leica using Ilford Note the corner darkening on the portrait was introduced in Lightroom. I'm a Leica photographer. I love the feel of my Leica cameras, and I love the look that the Leica lenses render.
That said I've a lot to keep learning, and this site is my journey, sharing photos.
