Gunsmoke first aired on the CBS network on April 26,billed as the first adult western.
It was set in Dodge CityKansas in the 's. The main character, Matt Dillonwas played by William Conrad. On August 6,William Conrad played the lead in a show entitled "Pagosa" in the series Romancewhere he played the part of a reluctant sheriff in a tough Western town. Although not a true audition, Conrad's character role is very close the that of Matt Dillon in Gunsmoke.
It was one of the "stepping stones" toward the production of Gunsmoke. The series featured top-notch acting and well-developed scripts that set it apart from many other shows, not only Westerns; however, it was the sound effects that stood out the most. Listen carefully and one can hear many levels of sound that really helps transport the listener back to the old west. Besides the US version, there was an Australian production of Gunsmoke. It began sometime intranscribed under the Artransa label, and aired Mondays at PM on the Macquarie network.
It is not known how many shows aired or how long the series ran. Reviewer: the3rdman - favorite favorite favorite favorite favorite - January 11, Subject: My Favorite Radio Series I have listened to all of the Gunsmoke radio programs and the great voices and sound effects make it seem as if I'm watching it.
I was surprised that the TV episodes were almost identical to the radio scripts. I was amazed as I watched them for the first time that it seemed as if I had already seen them before. This just goes to show how good the radio versions were. As a matter of fact, I think I enjoy the radio programs over the TV episodes. Reviewer: dustyinAK - favorite favorite favorite favorite favorite - December 18, Subject: 5 stars!
It doesn't have anything to do with this episode. Other than that, I'm enjoying every minute of every episode. A really great radio drama, it holds up as well now as it did when it was on the air.
Thanks to the people who saved these to the Archive! They have kept an important part of our popular culture history alive! Never get tired listening to the shows.
Each of the actors sound so convincing in their roles. All in all great wholesome entertainment. What's fun is listening to the radio side, then dvd side from say, Mac and Meston gives one to pick as Meston did variations to his tv side both became plus multipliers. Most the radio side guests went on to the tv side also, fun doing both, masters of work of quality, no wonder tv side lasted 20 years, Bill Conrad was never outta work, became famous voice of the fugitive series intro.

Reviewer: oldmusicfreak - favorite favorite favorite favorite favorite - January 26, Subject: One of the best. Im glad I found this. Gunsmoke was one of the best, right up there with Dragnet and X Minus One which I consider the top three radio programs of that era.
I listened to a couple then I was hooked. The radio version was more realistic than the TV version, Conrad's Matt Dillon was kind of brutal which was the way the old west really was.
As far as the skipping parts someone mentioned, I found that downloading the programs one at a time works better than doing the zip thing. I havent run into any skipping so far. Marshal Matt Dillon. Cattle rustlers! Card sharks and thieves! Outlaws of all types found haven in the largely lawless Wild West, where justice was served frontier style, with or without a makeshift trial, and grudges were settled at the barrel end of a gun, or at the loop end of a rope.
Originally, a radio show, Gunsmoke came to television at a time when Westerns were written for a very young audience. Gunsmoke was the first TV Western that appealed to adult viewers, depicting life as it might have been in a frontier town. Dodge City is a typical town of the late s, with its share of saloon brawls, family arguments. There to keep the citizens safe, and the town as peaceful as possible is Marshal Matt Dillon.
Instead of reaching for his gun as a first response, he solves crimes and disputes using judgement, keen observation, and chasing down clues. He catches outlaws with cunning and skill. He is measured, fair, honest, and dedicated to enforcing the law in an often lawless environment. Matt has few friends, but those in his circle are among his closest confidants. She does have a soft spot in her heart, and it belongs to Matt. He has a distinct limp, presumably from an old war wound.
Though many refer to him as a deputy, he wears no badge or gun. Technically, his duties are to help out around the jail, clean the office, run errands and make coffee.
However, because he is brave and determined, he is always there to back up Matt apprehending outlaws. After Chester departs, Festus Haggenwho has been in and out of Dodge City over time, joins forces with Matt as an official deputy.Retweet this tweet before midday (GMT) on Sunday 10th December and I'll send them to a lucky-dipped winner. Isn't that what you keep telling me, Roy. After the cutscene introducing the crime, walk into the bar and go incognito at the table to your left or the payphone on your right.
