Its plethora of tuners — a remarkable ten in the satellite version, including two for free-to-air TV — meant you could easily record multiple shows at once without regular viewing being interrupted or recordings clashing with one another. Those huge leaps in usability got a much-needed under-the-hood boost with the arrival of the iQ4, which aims to improve on its predecessor in every way. So does it deliver the goods in terms of features?
How easy is it to use? And is it worth spending a little extra to get one? It did what any good DVR should do — prioritised recording and playback integrity at all costs, even if that meant slow, sluggish on-screen menus, and a user interface that occasionally made the simple act of browsing through available channels feel like an exercise in slow-motion.
Pace is no longer around, having been absorbed by US company Arris just after the launch of the iQ3. And it was Arris that was tasked with delivering the long-rumoured update to the iQ3. It also happens to support 4K video. While the external appearance of the iQ4 is almost the same as that of the iQ3, you can tell them apart instantly if you know what to look for — the iQ4 has a pair of buttons on the right hand side of the front panel, while the old iQ3 has a single power button.
HDMI 2. More 4K channels are undoubtedly on the way — Foxtel has left space on their 4K satellite for at least two more. Satellite is an ideal delivery method for 4K, freed from the constraints of free-to-air broadcast TV when it comes to available bandwidth. The only real limit is how much capacity Foxtel has on the satellite.
But the iQ4 is more than capable of doing it, with support for the H. That support also means, of course, that Netflix can stream in full 4K on the iQ4. More on that below. Despite being a completely different box internally, compared to the iQ3, the iQ4 has quite a bit in common with its older sibling. And so once again we have ten tuners eight satellite and two terrestriala GB hard drive for about hours of HD recording, and a Bluetooth remote control.
New customers who get the iQ4 delivered will get the latest, upgraded remote control, which also works with infra-red, making it more reliable and responsive, and offers direct-access buttons for content categories as well as voice search. That new remote is also available to existing users for a small fee. Aside from the major internal upgrades, the iQ4 also boasts The box does its usual iQ start-up procedure — but multiple times faster than the old box did — and then will automatically install the latest software and reboot.
We cannot stress this enough — the difference in responsiveness and performance compared to the iQ3 is night and day.But the newest member of the iQ family takes things to a completely new level, expanding on the game-changing features first seen in the popular iQ3 and adding some eye-opening new ones.

The upgrade will become apparent as soon as you start using it. Powered by a next-generation processor, the iQ4 brings the recently upgraded Foxtel interface to life.
The goal with the iQ4 was to provide a familiar, consistent platform for your Foxtel viewing, but to enhance it using the latest advances in technology. This format offers quality and detail eight times that of High Definition — and more than 20 times greater than standard SD Foxtel channels. Until now, the only way to watch actual 4K content was either to buy a 4K Blu-ray player and discs, or have a broadband connection fast enough to stream at that quality online from streaming services like Netflix.
Foxtel 4K is the perfect way to show off that new TV — and the iQ4 is the only Foxtel box that can receive it. With thousands of hours of movies and TV to stream whenever you like or download to watch later, you never need to worry about catching up with a show again.
It puts them all on one handy screen which lets you get right back to watching without having to remember where you were up to.
Working in tandem with that is the popular Look Back, which lets you pull up the program guide and see what aired in the past 24 hours — and then watch any of it at the click of a remote control button, streamed via broadband. Fully wi-fi enabled, the iQ4 also supports Bluetooth for remote control — meaning you can install it out of sight and the remote will still work perfectly.

Rather than wait until the cricket starts in November, Foxtel decided to jump the gun and launch its new Ultra HD channel over the weekend in time for the Bathurst Watching the cars tear around Mount Panorama offers the perfect opportunity to put Foxtel's new 4K-capable iQ4 personal video recorder through its paces.
Thankfully Foxtel has knocked the iQ3 into shape over time, and the iQ4 sticks with the same basic design and user interface. The so-called "iQ3. If your 3. The new hardware packs more grunt under the bonnet than the original iQ3 to handle the demands of Ultra HD, which ensures that the menus are snappy and responsive.
Foxtel has wisely retained the infrared port. This is a godsend if you love your universal remote, or you simply find the supplied Bluetooth remote sluggish due to interference issues and need to switch back to an older Foxtel infrared remote. It's an issue we encountered with the iQ3, but not with the iQ4.
Like its predecessor, the iQ4 can record three programs at once while you watch a fourth live channel, a recording or something from Foxtel's streaming library. You can pause and even rewind live TV, as well as watch the start of a show while you're still recording the end known as chasing playback. You can also create series links to automatically record your favourite shows each week. While the iQ4 seems far more reliable than the iQ3 at launch, it still has a few annoying quirks. For example, if you have the HD package it can be difficult to force the box to record the HD channels rather than SD.
If you search for a show by name and then create a Series Link it defaults to SD, such as recording the show on Fox8 rather than Fox8 HD, and there's no easy way to switch to HD unless you trawl through the onscreen guide. Rather than the close ups of the cars, it's the long shots where you really see the benefits of that extra resolution in the fine detail.
Foxtel iQ4 review: ultra HD broadcasts a boon for sports fans
One of the best camera angles was looking from Blundstone Griffiths bend back up Mountain Straight towards Hell Corner. The leaves on the trees alongside the road clearly looked sharper, as did the signage and grandstand full of people in the distance.
The step up to Ultra HD also helped reduce the compression shimmer around the fast-moving cars in the long shots. Even the onscreen graphics, such as the leader board down the left of the screen, clearly benefited from the leap to 4K. The iQ4 didn't groan under the load of 4K, recording the Ultra HD and two HD channels simultaneously without skipping a beat even during chasing playback or when watching another recording.
Between major sporting events, Foxtel is running a mix of Ultra HD content on its new channel ; mostly nature documentaries with a few concerts thrown in like The Rolling Stones in Havana. It's not a full schedule, instead the hour channel cycles through about six hours of content each day. Foxtel's new 4K channel will show a sampling of Ultra HD content between live sport events. Of course one major hardware change is that the iQ4 only works with Foxtel's satellite service, so cable subscribers will need to get a dish on the roof if they want to upgrade to the new set-top box.
Like the satellite iQ3, the iQ4 features an aerial socket on the back, so you can use your TV aerial to tune into the free-to-air channels which aren't rebroadcast over Foxtel's satellite platform. The iQ4 sticks with 5. This might cause trouble depending on how you connect to your sound system. All things considered, there's not much point in upgrading to the iQ4 today unless you have an Ultra HD television which can do the new channel justice.
While it's still early days, Bathurst shows that Foxtel can clearly deliver on its 4K promises.
Meanwhile, the iQ4 is looking like a much less painful upgrade than the original bug-ridden iQ3. The new box will obviously become more attractive as Foxtel offers more Ultra HD content, but if your lounge room is 4K-ready then the iQ4 is shaping up as a real winner for sports fans.

It does a fair job but fall well l short of the hype. In one of the blurbs of how good it was I saw the note "IQ4, the only Media centre you will need". Changed our Foxtel through Telstra Package, and have had 2 issues. Initially we upgraded to the sports pack, but the stations would not come through-that required a reset by Foxtel. We got the Channels, but now we cannot record, pause, rewind etc.
